New Political Freedom in Algeria

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced that he planned to lift the nation's state of emergency that has been in place since 1992.  This came as a result of opposition demonstrations following the overthrow of neighboring Tunisia's government.

Public demonstrations are banned in the Algeria due to conflicts with Islamists in the 1990s.  Said Mr. Bouteflika, the state of emergency was in place "for the only purposes of the fight against terrorism, and it is this reason only which has justified maintaining it on a legal basis."

Mr. Bouteflika announced that protests would be allowed everywhere in the country except in the capital, Algiers.  He encouraged his cabinet to adopt measures to promote job creation and urged his nation's state television and radio to give airtime to all political parties.
