Violence arose as the sun set on Cairo today. The informal ceasefire between pro-Mubarak and anti-government camps was broken as fighting resumed in the streets. Journalists are still being attacked by the pro-Mubarak crowds, but are being protected in certain areas by soldiers.
This is a distressing development when many had hoped today's nonviolence would mark progress towards a peaceable solution. It is becoming more and more apparent that a compromise must be reached soon before the country tears itself apart.
The BBC reports that the disruption of Egypt's economy is costing $310m (£192m) per day.
