VP Suleiman talks with Opposition Parties; Muslim/Christian unity in Tahrir

Sec. of State Clinton announced from Germany, where she was meeting with several key European allies and UN representatives, that she supports the Muslim Brotherhood's involvement in political talks in Egypt.

Political talks are going ahead today as planned between Vice-President Suleiman and leaders of the opposition parties.  The banned Muslim Brotherhood has been included in these talks.  The parties have agreed to set up a committee to review constitutional reform.  There are many members of the opposition coalition that feel that meaningful talks about constitutional change cannot start until Mubarak steps down.  According to the BBC, a member of the opposition involved in the talks said that Vice-President Suleiman turned down a suggestion to take over for Mubarak in the interim.

At 1410, the BBC World Service reported: 'Following on from this morning's talks with the government, Muslim Brotherhood deputy leader Rashad Mohammed el-Bayoumy says the talks will only continue if there is progress towards meeting the movement's demands: "The immediate removal of this regime, beginning with Hosni Mubarak. The lifting of the emergency laws that we have been living under for more than 30 years... dissolving the parliament, which is in place only as a result of blatant election rigging, and finally, the release of all political prisoners."'

Many Egyptians are starting to go back to work after a week of the economy being almost totally kept at a standstill.

A small group of Christians held Sunday prayer in Tahrir Square, surrounded by Muslims, who showed their support by chanting the Arabic phrase for "One Hand."  The Coptic Christians of Egypt have put out several political messages, one of which points out that both the Bible and Koran are against despotism.  People in the square report that there is none of the former anxiety between Muslims and Christians.
