Protests in Yemen

In Yemen, there are escalating demonstrations in the street, both by anti-government forces and pro-government forces.  So far, no violence has occurred between the two rival camps.

The anti-government demonstrators are calling on President Saleh to step down.  This has been their only demand, but he has no clear-cut successor.  Saleh has publialy stated that he will not stand for reelection in 2013 nor would his son.  This concession has not been enough for the protesters.  Saleh has been an important ally in the Middle East for the United States and the West.  Stability in Yemen is of particular concern because there are believed to be al Qaeda training bases in the remote regions of the country.
